#onthisday, 2008, the first of three (to date) full-scale wars between the IDF and terrorist factions in Gaza (primarily Hamas) begins. 2 years after Israel fully withdrew from the Gaza Strip (both civilian and military – see our post on 8.17.20), Hamas forcefully took control of the Strip in an election-coup that exiled the Palestinian Authority while beginning their rocket barrages on Southern Israel. 1 year later, this all out conflict with Israel would break out
